Four Surprising Ways You Ruin Your Teeth

It’s no secret that failing to brush and floss your teeth is a quick way to damage them. However, you may be harming your teeth further without you realizing it. That said, here are a few surprising ways you ruin your teeth:

Too Much AlcoholBackMountainDental

This can be interpreted in two different ways. First, drinking too much alcohol is bad for your teeth because it can cause you to throw up, which exposes your teeth to hydrochloric acid from your stomach. Second, drinking alcoholic beverages often wears out tooth enamel due to the drink’s acidity.

Brushing too soon

The acid content of food softens tooth enamel. If you brush your teeth immediately after eating acidic foods, there is a good chance that you are scraping away at the enamel as you remove food particles. It is best to wait at least 30 minutes after eating before you brush your teeth.

Pool water in the mouth

Pool water typically contains chlorine that can erode enamel. According to research, 34 weeks of swimming in high-chlorine pool water is enough to cause advanced erosion in originally healthy teeth.

Hot to cold

Exposing your teeth to piping hot food causes the enamel to expand, while washing back food with an ice cold drink causes enamel to contract. If you allow this expansion-contraction to occur too fast and too often, it can lead to hairline cracks to appear on the enamel, which allows your teeth to chip and stain more easily.
