The Truth on Teeth Discoloration

Your pearly whites are one of the things that most people notice when you see and talk to them. It’s your crowning glory during social interactions, as people often remember and think more positively about people with bright, white teeth.

However, maintaining a bright smile also has its challenges. Knowing what tarnishes your pearly whites gives you a head start on how to combat the stains that can tinge your teeth. Here are the types of tooth stains you should be familiar with:

Extrinsic stainsBackMountainDental

Extrinsic stains are usually caused by something you ate or drank, and have pigmented materials that attach itself to the outer tooth enamel. Drinking excessive amounts of coffee, soda, wine or tea, and smoking can often instigate these stains. Routine dental cleaning, teeth brushing, flossing and mouth rinsing after having food that can stain the teeth can get rid of extrinsic stains.

Intrinsic stains

Also called deep stains, intrinsic stains affect the inner layer of the tooth enamel and darken the teeth. Too much exposure to fluoride, tetracycline antibiotics, past trauma to the mouth like internal bleeding, and the natural aging process are frequently the reasons for intrinsic stains. Your dentist can apply bleaching agent to significantly whiten your teeth, or can recommend you products to lighten any discolorations. You may also ask your dentist for veneers or crowns to conceal severe stains.
