Tooth Preparation: What You Can Expect

BackMountainDentalIf you are looking into getting a cosmetic dental procedure or restoration, you might come across the term “tooth preparation”. This refers to procedures the dentist will perform to prepare the affected tooth or teeth for cosmetic enhancement or restoration.

Tooth preparation is usually done on treatments and solutions like fillings, crowns, bridges, and veneers. Any decayed part of the tooth will be removed, and the healthy portion will be kept intact as much as possible. If needed, further contouring of the teeth may be done to accommodate dental resin or prosthetic, and allow a snug fit and stable attachment. Temporary bonding or restorations may be placed after the preparation. Continue reading

The Truth on Teeth Discoloration

Your pearly whites are one of the things that most people notice when you see and talk to them. It’s your crowning glory during social interactions, as people often remember and think more positively about people with bright, white teeth.

However, maintaining a bright smile also has its challenges. Knowing what tarnishes your pearly whites gives you a head start on how to combat the stains that can tinge your teeth. Here are the types of tooth stains you should be familiar with:

Extrinsic stainsBackMountainDental

Extrinsic stains are usually caused by something you ate or drank, and have pigmented materials that attach itself to the outer tooth enamel. Drinking excessive amounts of coffee, soda, wine or tea, and smoking can often instigate these stains. Routine dental cleaning, teeth brushing, flossing and mouth rinsing after having food that can stain the teeth can get rid of extrinsic stains.

Intrinsic stains

Also called deep stains, intrinsic stains affect the inner layer of the tooth enamel and darken the teeth. Too much exposure to fluoride, tetracycline antibiotics, past trauma to the mouth like internal bleeding, and the natural aging process are frequently the reasons for intrinsic stains. Your dentist can apply bleaching agent to significantly whiten your teeth, or can recommend you products to lighten any discolorations. You may also ask your dentist for veneers or crowns to conceal severe stains.

Wilkes-Barre Dentist Whitens and Enlightens

Bright, white smiles are in. Patients are frequently turning to their dentists to reverse discoloration caused by smoking, wine, coffee, or time. While whitening treatments have come a long way over the years, and current whiteners are less abrasive, you must still avoid overuse of these products. Today, your Wilkes-Barre cosmetic dentist, Dr. James DeFinnis, discusses the benefits of whitening and why too much of a good thing can impact your oral health.

Desiring a Hollywood Grin?

White teeth are a Hollywood standard, and celebrities often set trends when it comes to appearance. Actors and actresses have to maintain a facade of enduring youth, and yellowing and stains on teeth can be a sign of age. Whitening teeth can take years off of your appearance, and give you an inner confidence that encourages you to smile bigger and brighter. In that way, Hollywood has it right, but it’s important to be realistic and remember that photos in magazines and on the internet are sometimes altered, giving us a skewed idea of what a healthy, white smile should look like.

National Children’s Dental Health Month

As you can see, it’s been a while since we posted on this blog, but Wilkes Barre dentist Dr. James DeFinnis and the Back Mountain Dental team are happy to announce that it’s back up and running. Today, we’re talking about the same topic that we left off on exactly a year ago: children’s dental health.

Doing Our Part to Help Children Smile Bigger and Better

If you read the last Back Mountain Dental newsletter, you know that, over the past month, our new dental hygienist Daiphin has been traveling to schools across the Trucksville community to educate little ones about the importance of having healthy teeth and gums.

When she visits schools, Daiphin discusses proper brushing and flossing, the importance of going to the dentist, how to eat healthy, and more. Today, Dr. DeFinnis wants to talk about the same topics so that you and your child can finish National Children’s Dental Health Month on a high note. Continue reading
